Cherry Island Landfill Expansion Project Engineer Selected for AAEES Award2/23/2013
The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is proud to announce that the Cherry Island Landfill Expansion Project design engineer, Geosyntec Consultants, will be awarded the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists (AAEES) Excellence in Environmental Engineering & Science (E3) Honor Award for design. The award will be presented at the Academy’s Annual Awards Luncheon held in Washington, DC at the National Press Club on April 25, 2013. The Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Competition began in 1989 and exists to identify and reward the best of today's environmental engineering. Its criteria define what it takes to be the best in environmental engineering practice: a holistic environmental perspective, innovation, proven performance and customer satisfaction, and contribution to an improved quality of life and economic efficiency. The competition is organized around the normal phases of development and implementation of environmental management projects and programs: research, planning, design, and operations and management. The Cherry Island Landfill Expansion Project utilized intensive engineering analysis, monitoring and construction techniques encompassing an installation of 6.8 million linear feet of prefabricated vertical drains and a massive mechanically stabilized earthen berm. Critical to the design and the success of the project was the continuous monitoring and prediction of the on-going consolidation and strength gains of the subsoils. The project significantly extends the life of the landfill to serve New Castle County, while utilizing the landfill’s existing footprint and infrastructure. On Tuesday, November 15, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) threw the switch to energize a 7.92-kilowatt solar power expansion at the Sandtown Landfill in Kent County. This expansion adds to the existing 7.98-kilowatt system, which was installed in 2009. This expansion brings the total system capacity to 15.9-kilowatts. The solar collection is installed on top of the Area A/B disposal area that has been closed since 1988. In 2008, DSWA installed a manmade wetlands treatment and irrigation system at Sandtown to treat leachate generated in the closed disposal area. The completed solar power system now provides enough energy to power the entire wetlands treatment and irrigation system. DSWA is also proud to say that both the solar modules and racking system used in the expansion were manufactured in Delaware and contractors based in Delaware installed both phases of the project. For more information on DSWA, its facilities or programs will contact the Citizens’ Response Line at 1-800-404-7080 or visit www.dswa.com DSWA Helps Recycle at Delaware Coastal Cleanup9/1/2011
For the last few years, ‘Can we recycle some of this?’ has been a commonly asked question about the annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup. This year, when volunteers gather for the event at more than 40 sites statewide from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 17, the answer will be ‘Yes, we can!’ The new recycling initiative will be supported by a new partnership between the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and Waste Management, the largest residential recycler and leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America. Following the Cleanup, Waste Management will be picking up the bagged recyclables and trash from all of the sites. “For more than 20 years, the Delaware Coastal Cleanup has combined environmental education with measurable action by dedicated volunteers to make our beautiful beaches and waterways cleaner,” said DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara. “By adding recycling and with the support of Waste Management – a great example of how public-private partnerships can benefit our environment – we are bringing the Coastal Cleanup into the 21st century and aligning it with Delaware’s commitment to universal recycling.” “Waste Management is pleased to partner this year with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control for the annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup,” said Tom Houska, Senior District Manager for Waste Management of Wilmington. “This important annual event aligns with Waste Management’s goal to be good neighbors with each other and the environment we share. We want to help ensure the beaches and waterways in Delaware are clean and beautiful for all of us to enjoy.” “With single-stream recycling now established in Delaware and public consciousness of recycling at a new high with the recent advent of universal curbside pickup, the time is right to add recycling to the longtime tradition of the Coastal Cleanup,” said Delaware Coastal Cleanup Coordinator Jack Hoban, who was able to obtain 2,000 tan trash bags donated by the Delaware Solid Waste Authority to be used for recyclables. Part of the goal was to make the change to recycling easy for volunteers, he added, by providing two different colors of trash bags for easy separation and identification of trash and recyclables, and by focusing on the most common recyclable items – plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers. “Last year, Coastal Cleanup volunteers collected nearly nine and a half tons of trash from Delaware’s beaches, waterways and estuaries up and down the state, including nearly 9,000 recyclable plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers. This year, we’re very excited that we can add recycling to this event, and we hope to divert a substantial portion of these items from the waste stream to become recycled materials, adding an additional environmental benefit,” Hoban continued, noting that beverage containers placed in the tan bags for recycling need to be fairly clean, not full of sand or mud. Volunteers will need to be aware of the change – but it doesn’t mean a big change in what they will be doing on Cleanup day, Hoban said. “Volunteers usually head out in groups of three or four – one to keep the data card and the rest with trash bags. At this year’s Cleanup, at least one of those pickup volunteers will carry a tan trash bag for recyclables while the others carry the usual black bags for trash. Then the volunteers will place the bags in separate piles at the designated trash pickup point,” he explained. Volunteers are strongly encouraged to pre-register for the Delaware Coastal Cleanup on the DNREC website to ensure that enough T-shirts, trash bags, gloves and other supplies are provided for each site. To pre-register, go to www.dnrec.delaware.gov/CoastalCleanup . Pre-registration will close on Monday, Sept. 12. On the day of the event, T-shirts will be distributed to volunteers who have not pre-registered while supplies last. Delaware’s Cleanup is part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest annual clearing of trash from coastlines and lakes by volunteers. The Ocean Conservancy supplies trash bags and data cards. Delaware’s event is co-sponsored by Delmarva Power, which provides t-shirts. Another key sponsor is the Dover-based Playtex Division of Energizer Personal Care, which provides gloves. DNREC is responsible for organizing the event, recruiting volunteers, distributing supplies, ensuring trash removal and tabulating data. For more information about the Delaware Coastal Cleanup, please contact Jack Hoban, Delaware Coastal Cleanup coordinator, at 302-739-9278. This decision has been made to begin the transition of curbside recycling services from DSWA to municipalities and private trash haulers, which is required in the new Universal Recycling Law. The Governor’s Universal Recycling Bill was signed into law June 8, 2010. DSWA believes the Universal Recycling Law will significantly increase the amount of recycling participation in Delaware by requiring the municipalities and the private trash haulers to provide curbside recycling service to all of their customers by the mandated date of September 15, 2011. March 31, 2011 will be the last pick up day for DSWA’s single stream curbside recycling customers statewide. It has been the pleasure of DSWA to offer single stream curbside recycling to all the residents of Delaware and DSWA would like to thank all of the participants that have helped further the recycling cause in Delaware. Customers may keep the DSWA recycling cart for use by their trash hauler. If you do not currently have a trash collection hauler and desire to have your recycling cart picked up, you must call DSWA to arrange a pick up. DSWA Celebrates Milestone at Sandtown Landfill6/30/2010
The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is celebrating a major milestone at its Sandtown Landfill located in Kent County. The facility has accepted its four millionth ton of municipal solid waste. The facility opened in October of 1980 and is available to public, commercial, and residential customers in Kent County. The 834-acre facility includes a multi-cell lined landfill for solid waste disposal, 2 scales, scale house, a maintenance building and an administration building as well as a small load drop-off area for residents who wish to dispose of their trash without driving onto the working face of the landfill. In addition, there are designated areas to recycle used appliances, tires, and yard waste. Sandtown Landfill Facility Manager, Jason Munyan said, “I am honored to be involved with reaching such a milestone event and must praise the hard work and efforts put in by both DSWA Staff and the Facility Operator, George and Lynch. Reaching our four millionth ton is a testament to DSWA's mission to define, develop, and implement cost-effective plans and programs for solid waste management, which best serve Delaware and protect our public health and environment. Now on to our next million.” DSWA is proud to be able to provide the Sandtown Landfill to the communities in Kent County and thanks them for their patronage. The center will be removed on Friday, June 25. Residents in the area, who are interested in recycling, can take their recyclables to the nearest centers located at the Goodwill on Lea Boulevard or to Bellevue State Park located on Carr Road. The Governor’s Universal Recycling Bill was signed into law June 8, 2010 at the Cherry Island Landfill. DSWA believes the Universal Recycling Law will significantly increase the amount of recycling participation in Delaware by requiring the municipalities and the private trash haulers to provide curbside recycling service to all of their customers. The new law also requires DSWA to stop offering curbside recycling and yard waste collection services as of September 15, 2011. The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) has long been a leader in curbside recycling services. DSWA started a pilot curbside collection program in 2003. The program started out slow, just serving a couple of zip codes in the Brandywine Hundred area. Over the past seven years, through hard work and dedication from the members of the DSWA recycling staff and substantial money spent on advertising efforts, the curbside recycling program has been a great success. At its highest service level DSWA provided service to just fewer than 50,000 households throughout Delaware. With the success of the DSWA curbside program, many municipalities and private companies followed DSWA in providing curbside recycling service to their customers. In order to keep the curbside momentum going, it is extremely important for DSWA to prepare for the transition from DSWA curbside recycling service to municipal and private collection. It will be extremely difficult to lose many of the dedicated employees that have worked so very hard to make curbside recycling a success story in Delaware. DSWA realizes many employees will look for employment with the municipal and private collectors. With the loss of these employees it will be very difficult to service our valued customers. During the transition period DSWA will make every effort to continue to provide the excellent service that our customers have grown accustomed to receiving. DSWA would like to thank all of the curbside customers in advance for their patience and understanding due to any inconvenience this may cause during the transition period. DSWA will continue to offer all other recycling services, including single stream recycling drop off locations, household hazardous waste events, electronic goods recycling and oil filter recycling. DSWA will be providing a more details as we work with the other stakeholders through this transition period. If you have questions you can call the DSWA Citizens Response Line for more information 800-404-7080. |
