Pasquale S. (“Pat”) Canzano, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (“DSWA”) for the past seven years recently informed the Board of Directors of his intention to retire, effective January 1, 2014. Mr. Canzano was hired by DSWA, as part of the original management structure, shortly after its creation 38 years ago. The Board accepted Mr. Canzano’s decision with mixed feelings, recognizing his extraordinary leadership service during the extended global economic struggles of the past six years combined with rapidly developing technological and business-model changes within the waste industry generally. At the same time, though missing him keenly, the Board wishes Mr. Canzano long, healthy, enjoyable and well-deserved retirement with his wife Joyce and their family.
With Mr. Canzano’s retirement, the Board is pleased to announce that following a rigorous internal process of solicitation and review, it has appointed DSWA’s current Chief Operating Officer (COO), Richard P. Watson to succeed Pat as the next CEO of the Authority, likewise effective January 1, 2014. A Delaware Registered Professional Engineer with a Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mr. Watson began his career with DSWA as an engineer in 1981, holding increasingly responsible positions ever since.
To complete the composition of DSWA’s new senior management leadership, the Board is delighted to announce its selection of Ms. Robin Roddy to succeed Mr. Watson as COO, also effective January 1, 2014. A Delaware Registered Professional Engineer, Ms. Roddy has been professionally employed with the Authority for 18 years and is currently the Senior Facility Manager of the Cherry Island Landfill.
“Pat has steered the Authority through particularly challenging times that dominated most of his tenure as CEO. Not only did he have to contend with the worst economic climate the Authority had ever experienced, but the rapid development of waste-industry technologies and business models.” noted DSWA Chairman Richard Pryor.
Mr. Pryor also noted his satisfaction with the new leadership team that will succeed Mr. Canzano’s team. “Rick brings 35 years of rich experience to the job and as COO, he is well versed in all aspects of the solid waste industry and particularly so in DSWA’s policies, operations and programs,” Pryor said. “At Cherry Island, Robin’s leadership skills have been honed and successfully put to the test in a very challenging environment there over the past 13 years. She has consistently exhibited good judgment, sound strategic thinking, and comfortably effective management skills,” he said.
Pryor further noted that the Board is especially pleased that these two key senior management positions are being filled from within the organization. This reflects in part DSWA’s long-standing policies and practices to ensure smooth management transition processes by retaining highly qualified and demonstrably competent staff to the maximum extent feasible.
