DSWA participates in world record attempt for largest plastic bag ball

On Saturday, April 23 the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) participated in with Delaware Sierra Club and BringYourOwnBag Delaware at an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Plastic Bag Ball!  Many local schools, churches and other organizations had been collecting “single-use” plastic shopping bags for several weeks and delivered those bags on Saturday to the Riverfront in Wilmington, where the plastic bag ball was created.  Over 52,000 plastics bags were contributed to the event.  The goal was to create a ball weighing at least 220 pounds, but by the end of the day the group had exceeded that goal and finished a ball weighing 340 pounds.  The goal of the record-setting event was to raise awareness about plastic pollution.

From now until June the world largest plastic bag ball will be on display at DSWA’s Environmental Education Building in New Castle afterwards the ball will be sent to Trex, who creates eco-friendly decking.
