Home Resources Transfer Stations

Transfer Stations

  • What is a transfer station?

A transfer station is a facility that accepts solid waste from haulers, businesses and residents. The purpose of a transfer station is to save on the number of vehicles traveling to and from DSWA landfills and to also cut down on fuel and green house gas emissions.

  • What happens to the solid waste that is collected at the transfer station?

Haulers, businesses, and residents dispose of their waste on a cement tipping floor. The waste is then put into a transfer trailer and taken to the nearest landfill for final disposal. Regulations for the transfer station state that waste must be removed from the facility within 72 hours, however DSWA makes an effort to remove the waste within a 24-hour period.

  • What are the hours of operation?

DSWA operates three transfer stations, one per county in Delaware, which are open to residents.
Pine Tree Corners Transfer Station, Townsend DE- 7am-5pm Monday-Saturday
Milford Transfer Station, Milford DE, 7am-3pm, Monday-Saturday
Rt. 5 Transfer Station, Harbeson DE, 7am-3pm, Monday-Saturday

  • What are the fees charged for disposal?

    Rate Sheet 2015

  • What forms of payment are accepted?

DSWA accepts cash or check only at its transfer stations. DSWA does not accept credit or debt cards.

  • What types of waste are accepted?
