Before heading to the facility, a few quick tips and an overview of the process can help your visit go smoothly:
Before You Arrive
- Secure your load — all loads must be covered or tarped
- Separate yard waste from trash
- Bring assistance if you may need help unloading
When You Arrive
- Drive onto the scale and stop at the scale house
- A weighmaster will assist you and direct you to the appropriate disposal area
- Residents using the small load collection area will be directed to a designated area separate from main operations
- Follow all posted signs and staff instructions while on site
Before You Leave
- Return to the scale to be weighed out
- Disposal fees are based on the difference between your inbound and outbound weight
- Payment is made at the scale house before exiting
Important to Know
- DSWA facilities accept waste generated within Delaware only. Out-of-state waste is not accepted.
- Construction & demolition material from contractors is NOT accepted at DSWA Transfer Stations.

What Happens to Your Trash?

At transfer stations, waste is temporarily collected and then transported to DSWA landfills or other processing facilities. This short video provides a behind-the-scenes look at how DSWA Transfer Stations operate.
Household & Everyday Waste
- Residential household trash
- Municipal solid waste from DSWA licensed collection vehicles
Special Accepted Items
- White Goods (refrigerators, air conditioners, appliances)
- Refrigerants are safely removed by DSWA technicians
- Metals are recycled
- Tires
- Limit of 4 passenger-size tires per load
Yard Waste
Yard waste must be separated from other trash!
Accepted items include:
- Grass
- Leaves
- Pruning
- Brush
- Shrubs
- Garden material
Why separate it?
Separating yard waste allows it to be recycled instead of disposed of as trash.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of DSWA’s Recycling Drop-Off Centers before disposing of household waste.
Recycling at these locations is FREE for Delaware residents.
What Can I Drop Off?
The following materials are accepted at Transfer Station Recycling Drop-Off Centers:
- Single Stream Recycling
- Paper, cardboard, plastic bottles & containers, aluminum and steel cans
(All recyclables can be placed together — no sorting required)
- Paper, cardboard, plastic bottles & containers, aluminum and steel cans
- Used Motor Oil & Oil Filters
- Must be from household sources only
- Oil should be in a sealed container
- Filters should be drained
- Household Batteries
- Common household batteries such as AA, AAA, C, D, and button batteries
Helpful Tips
- Only place accepted materials in designated containers
- Do not bag recyclables — keep them loose
- Follow all posted signage and staff instructions
