What Happens to Your Trash?
Ever wonder what happens after you drop off your waste?
This short video provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Delaware’s landfills operate and how materials are managed once they arrive.
Household & Everyday Waste
- Household trash (small load area available for residents, if applicable)
- Municipal solid waste from private haulers
Construction & Bulk Materials
- Construction & demolition debris
- White goods (refrigerators, air conditioners, and other appliances)
- Tires
Yard Waste
Yard Waste must be separated from other trash!
Yard waste includes:
- Grass
- Leaves
- Pruning
- Brush
- Shrubs
- Garden material
- Christmas trees
- Tree limbs (up to 4 inches in diameter)
Why does it need to be separated?
Yard waste cannot be mixed with regular trash due to permit requirements from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).
Keeping yard waste separate allows it to be recycled instead of going to the landfill. Yard waste brought to DSWA facilities is placed in a designated area for recycling.
⚠️ Asbestos
The facility accepts certain types of asbestos, including:
- Category I & II Non-Friable
- Class “A” (Friable)
However, strict handling requirements apply:
- Advance notice and an appointment are required
- All materials must be properly packaged, sealed, and labeled
- Required documentation must accompany each load
- Customers must notify the weighmaster upon arrival
Where Can I Bring Asbestos?
- Cherry Island Landfill accepts all approved asbestos materials
- Sandtown and Jones Crossroads facilities accept limited quantities of non-friable asbestos
- Larger or more complex loads must be taken to Cherry Island
📞 Call ahead to confirm the correct location for your material.
Important Requirements
- Asbestos must be wetted and securely packaged to prevent dust
